What to do if you have unexpired visa’s on your expired Canadian passport
The obtaining of a visa stamp in your passport is part and parcel of travelling. So what do you do when you submit a passport renewal application that contains a valid visa.
The key is making the Passport Office aware of your intentions, the following actions need to be taken depending on the method of application you use. Following the actions below will help in ensuring the unexpired visa in your passport remains intact.
Applying by Mail
You need to clearly you indicate on the passport renewal application form that your old passport needs to be returned to you, and
advise the Passport Office that the visa needs to remain intact.
Applying in Person
You need to inform the agent that the old passport needs to be returned to you, and that the visa in your passport needs to remain intact.
Apply using a receiving agent
You need to include a letter to the Passport Office informing them that your old passport needs to be returned to you, and that the visa in your passport needs to remain intact.
Tips when travelling
- Remember your expired passport which has a valid visa stamp can still be used until it expires
- You will need to carry both passports the renewed and expired when you travel.
- Most countries prohibit the transfer for a valid visa into a new passport, if you wish to have the visa in your new passport you will need to do a new application.
- Remember to be aware of the security and location both passports whilst you travel as a loss of either passport, will have complicated implications.
