Canadian Passport Renewal abroad
Fortunately you do not have to jump through hoops when it comes to renewing your Canadian passport abroad. In fact if you follow our three step process you are sure to eliminate the need to redo your application.
Before you start with process of renewing your most recent Canadian passport should meet the following criteria;
- your passport should still be valid or expired for no more than one year;
- your passport should have the same name as your current application;
- your passport should have been issued with 5-year or 10-year validity;
- your passport should not be damaged;
- your passport should never have reported lost or stolen; and
- you were at least 16 years old at the time of your previous application.
Simplified Renewal Passport Application process
Step 1
If you can answer yes to all of the above conditions then you can renew your passport using the Simplified Renewal Passport Application process complete PPTC 482 form.
- Complete all relevant sections of application form
- Sign every page.
- If paying by credit card it is important to include the payment information, which is
- 5-year passport – Can$190
- 10-year passport – Can$260 (The fee will converted to the local currency)
Step 2
Gather necessary supporting documentation for your application:
most recent passport
2 identical passport photos ( the name and address of the photographer and the date the photos were taken must be on the back of one photo)
If your old passport has unexpired visas which you will need for subsequent travel, you will need to state on the application form that you want the passport returned to you.
Step 3
When all the t’s have been crossed and all the i’s dotted it is time to Submit the application, the official processing time is 20 days. Where you submit your passport renewal application will largely depend on your location, Canada has 100s of embassies around the world and applications are normally dealt with there.
If you are not eligible for the simplified application process detailed above you will need to follow the conventional passport renewal application, which requires additional documents to support the application.
Adult Abroad General Passport Application
Step 1
- Complete all relevant sections of the Adult Abroad General Passport Application form PPTC040
- Sign every page.
- If paying by credit card it is important to include the payment information, which is
- 5-year passport – Can$190
- 10-year passport – Can$260 (The fee will converted to the local currency)
Step 2
You will need a guarantor.
A guarantor is someone who has known you personally for at least 2 years. The guarantor will perform 3 tasks
- Complete and sign the Declaration of Guarantor (section 2).
- Write “I certify this to be a true likeness of (your name)” on the back of one of your photos, and sign it.
- If applicable, sign and date a copy of each document to support your identity
If no eligible guarantor is known, include a completed Statutory Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor form.
Proof of citizenship
- Canadian birth certificate or
- Certificate of Canadian citizenship (The document must be original, some embassies will accept faxed copies sent to them directly)
Two identical photographs
- One is signed by the guarantor
- The other should have the date and location of where the photograph was taken on the back
Supporting document bearing your name and signature
One of the following;
- Valid passport of another country
- Valid driving licence
- Valid Health Card
Photo copies are acceptable but will need to be signed by the guarantor.
Step 3
Submit the application, the official processing time is 20 days.
