The type of passport renewal you choose will depend on the time you have until your intended departure date.

>> Less than 3 weeks before travel
>> Less than 2 weeks before travel
>> Less than 1 week before travel
1. If you have more than 4 weeks before travel
Application type: Use the Simplified Passport Renewal Application process.
Passport Renewal Standard Fee: C$120 (5 year passport) – C$160 (10 year passport)
Passport Renewal Fee Additional: C$0
Processing time: 20 business days which is 4 weeks. Remember during peak periods the volume of applications is high, therefore backlogs may cause delays.
2. If you have less than 3 weeks before travel
Application type: Use the Standard Passport Renewal Application process.
Passport Renewal Standard Fee: C$120 (5 year passport) – C$160 (10 year passport)
Passport Renewal Fee Additional: C$20
Processing time: 10 business days.
3. If you have less than 2 weeks before travel
Application type: Use the Express Passport Renewal Application process. You will need to visit your nearest Passport Office to submit your application. Please note that the following Passport Canada offices in are not able to accept and process passport renewal applications; Pointe-Claire, Whitby, Brampton, Calgary South, Kelowna and Richmond.
Passport Renewal Standard Fee: C$120 (5 year passport) – C$160 (10 year passport)
Passport Renewal Fee Additional: C$50
Processing time: 2 to 9 days
4. If you have less than 1 week before travel
Application type: Use the Urgent Passport Renewal Application process. You will need to visit your nearest Passport Office to submit your application. Please note that the following Passport Canada offices will accept and process passport renewal applications however you will be required to pick up your new passport at another location which will be confirmed the day you submit your application, Whitby, Brampton, Calgary South and Richmond.
Passport Renewal Standard Fee: C$120 (5 year passport) – C$160 (10 year passport)
Passport Renewal Fee Additional: C$110
Processing time: 24 hours.

ONE: Complete Simplified Application form PPTC 054
BEFORE you start that passport application process you were at least 16 years of age at the time of your previous application;
- the name on this application form is exactly as it appears on page 2 of the submitted passport
- you submit a previous Canadian passport that
- is valid or expired for no more than one (1) year
- was/is valid for five (5) years or ten (10) years
- is not damaged
- was never reported lost or stolen
TWO: Gather Supporting Documents
ONE of the following documents,
- Provincial or territorial (or equivalent abroad) driver’s licence
- Provincial or territorial non-driver’s licence
- Other federal, provincial or territorial identification card
- Military identification
- Certificate of Indian Status
- Federal, provincial or territorial employee identification card
- Foreign passport that meets the requirements
If your surname is changing you will need to submit the following documents with your application:
- a marriage certificate; or
- a common-law relationship certificate; or
- a court order (i.e. separation agreement or divorce order/judgement) issued
- by a court of law in or outside Canada; or
- a certificate to dissolve a registered common-law relationship; or
- a resumption of surname certificate.
Child passport renewal documentation
From October 1, 2012, a passport renews application for a child under 16 years of age must include one (1) of the following proof of parentage documents;
- A detailed (long-form) birth certificate issued by a Canadian provincial or
- territorial vital statistics office that indicates the name of the parent(s) This
- document is also accepted as proof of Canadian Citizenship;
- If born in Ontario, a certified copy of birth registration is acceptable.
- If born in Quebec, a copy of an act of birth is acceptable.
- A court-issued adoption order indicating the name of the adoptive parent(s); or
- A foreign birth certificate that indicates the name of the parent(s)
THREE: Package and Send
It is advisable to send your passport application using a certified courier or traceable mail service. This helps as this gives you the added peace of mind of knowing your passport will get to intended receipt in a timely manner. Knowing when passport was received is the starting point of calculating when to expect your new passport back.
